Burning Man!
It's that time of year again... when thoughts start to drift to sequin-covered dresses, cowboy boots, and dirt-filled tents. Ah, Burning Man. It looks like we're actually going to be able to go this year, and know others who are going, too! I know Brandon is going to love it, we've just gotta be able to shake off the 9-5 stuff for a while, forget our deadlines, finances and other terribly pressing concerns, and live life minute by minute for a while. For 7 days, actually.
Part of the fun is planning the trip. Should we take the truck? Can we fit everything in the tent? Can we bring our couch? A rug? A full-length mirror? Do we have 2 crappy bikes? What will our costumes look like? Where will we volunteer? Should we make an art project?
I remember a friend telling me that Burning Man was going to change my life. So, I went expecting nothing at all. I thought she was hyping it up. However, slowly but surely I noticed changes in myself after Burning Man. It didn't happen right away, but it happened.
My taste in music changed 100 percent. I like the old stuff, but I also found myself downloading electronic music; trance, house, etc... I found hula hooping. Which really did change my life. I brought hoops with me to Mexico, I won the talent show at a work party, started and failed a business, and met countless people all because of my hoops! All my recent art projects were inspired by art I saw at Burning Man, including much of what covers the walls in my house today. It also gave me confidence. I never had a problem with dancing in public, but I never thought I'd hula hoop, in costume, in front of everyone at my 10-year high school reunion.
I still don't wear patchouli or give everyone I meet extra-long hugs, but a lot has stayed with me since my week in the desert 2 years ago. I wonder what we'll bring away this time?
